Pregnancy

During pregnancy you will miss your menstrual period or monthly bleeding. You may feel nauseated or sick to your stomach. Your bests may feel full and tingly.

What should I do if I think I’m pregnant?

  • Go to a doctor, nurse or clinic.
  • A urine or blood test can confirm you are pregnant.
  • This care for you and the baby is called prenatal care.
  • If this is an unplanned pregnancy, there are choices you can make.
  • Discuss these with your doctor.

How to have a healthy pregnancy:

  • Eat healthy
    • Plenty of dairy foods. 4-5 servings milk or cheese a day
    • Protein/ meat: 2-3 servings day
    • Fruits and vegetables: 5-6 servings
    • Breads & grains: 5 servings
  • Take a prenatal vitamin daily
  • Do not smoke
  • Do not drink alcohol or take illegal drugs
  • Do not take any medicine, herbs or plant material without talking to your health provider

Call your clinic or health care provider is you have problems like this:

  • Vaginal bleeding: bleeding from the area the baby comes out
  • A very bad headache
  • Painful or sore stomach ache
  • Vomiting that doesn’t stop
  • Swelling of hands or face (foot or ankle swelling is normal)

What are childbirth classes?

  • Classes where you will learn what to do and expect when you go to the hospital to have your baby
  • Classes will tell you what labor is like
  • Classes will talk about breast feeding or bottle feeding

How do I know if it is time for the baby to come out or that labor has begun?

  1. Your “water breaks.” The baby lives in a sac filled with fluid. You feel a gush of fluid or a slow leak.
  2. You have contractions. You feel pains as the uterus tightens and releases. These contractions happen over and over and come closer together.
  3. If either of these things happen, you should call your health care provider (doctor, nurse, midwife or clinic) right away

Should I breast feed my baby?

  • Breast feeding is the best way to feed a baby.
  • It is healthy for baby
  • It helps a new baby and mother become closer to each other
  • You should eat healthy and drink plenty of fluids and 4-5 servings of dairy foods

When do I go back to the doctor or clinic after delivery?

  • A new baby needs to be seen in one to two weeks after birth for well baby visit.
  • A mom need to see a health care provider in 2-4 weeks after the baby is born for a visit.
  • You need to make an appointment.
