Diabetes
It is a Disease that impairs the body’s
ability to use food. The hormone insulin, which is made in the
pancreas, helps the body to change food into energy. With diabetes,
either the pancreas doesn’t make insulin (Type I) or the
body doesn’t use the insulin properly (Type II). Without
insulin, sugar - the body’s main energy source - builds
up in the blood. Type 1 of diabetes usually effect children
and adolescents.
What are the symptoms?
- excessive thirst
- frequent urination
- fatigue
- blurred vision
How do I know if I have it?
- A fasting blood test for sugar will be high
Who is at risk for diabetes?
- People who are overweight
- People who have family members with diabetes
What should I do if I have diabetes?
- If you keep your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol
close to target, you may prevent or delay serious health problems
- Meal planning can help your body maintain healthy blood
sugar levels
- Exercise also helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels
- Lose weight if you are overweight.
- Check your blood sugar levels at home
- You may need pills, insulin shots or both
- See an eye doctor each year (where the eye doctor uses drops
to see the back of your eye)
- Have your blood pressure checked each visit.
Your goal is under 130/80.
- Get a blood cholesterol checked each year.
Your goals:
- Total cholesterol below 200
- LDL cholesterol below 100
- HDL cholesterol above 45
- Triglycerides below 150
- Make sure your doctor give you a complete foot exam at
least once a year.
- Check your feet every day
