How do I know if I have a problem?

You may have a problem with depression if you have:

  • Feel sad a lot of the time
  • Sleep problems, too much or too little
  • Low energy
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Appetite changes, eating too much or too little
  • Loss of interest in activities, hobbies
  • Guilt feelings, blaming yourself a lot
  • Wishing you would die

You may have a problem with anxiety if you have episodes where:

  • You feel shaky inside
  • You have body tremors
  • Your heart pounds rapidly
  • You feel as if you can’t get enough air

You may have a problem with post-traumatic stress disorder if you:

  • Think about stressful events all the time
  • Have recurrent dreams or nightmares
  • Have memory gaps
  • Have loss of interest in normal activities
  • Have triggers or reminders that bring on these feelings
  • Avoid talking about the stressful event

What can I do about this?

  • Talk to your health care provider about your symptoms
  • Medical treatment and counseling are recommended for these problems
  • The responses to traumatic stress are normal and are the result of things that happened to you
