This service began in 2004 when SWCA collaborated with Otterbein College in a two phase health education program. The program targeted adolescents and elders in the Somali community. The goal of Phase I was to establish an outreach health education program for 100-150 Somali families. SWCA and Otterbein exceeded this goal and more than 250 families were served. Targeted individuals received education on sex, nutrition, cancer, exercise, trauma, depression, pregnancy and general health. Phase II provided education on sexually transmitted diseases, post traumatic stress disorder, headaches, asthma, gastrointestinal problems, and nutrition. Although the goals were successfully met in both phases there are still many health obstacles to tackle. As a result, SWCA continues to provide this service without funding. |
